Establish an energy management program. Analyse how your workplace is using energy, assess its commitment to energy management and then develop and implement an energy management policy or plan. Use the Energy Management Guide to help you.
Establish a monitoring program to identify and track energy consumption. This will provide baseline information for measuring trends and identifying opportunities for improvement. After you've introduced energy saving measures, hard facts about consumption and cost savings could also help win support for further energy initiatives.
Raise staff awareness and enlist their support in developing and implementing energy saving initiatives. Communicate and celebrate achievements and encourage active participation.
Seek support and assistance – learn from others. Investigate and consider the Best Practice Energy Efficiency Initiative. Since 1997, over 200 companies have taken part in this NSW Government initiative and as a consequence, the program has been responsible for energy savings of $30 million and a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of 530,000 tonnes per year.
Businesses can also apply for support via the Energy Savings Fund, an initiative of the Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability (DEUS).
Use the Energy Smart Allies Directory to locate organisations providing energy efficient products and services. It covers a broad range of know-how and suppliers, from air conditioning and lighting specialists to engineering consultants and architects.
