Recycling equipment and bin design

Design, capacities and capabilities of waste and recycling equipment vary greatly. When contacting collection services clarify what arrangements apply, if any, for supplying and supporting recycling equipment. Many waste and recycling services provide suitable bins and other collection equipment. See the Buy Recycled website for more information about equipment and suppliers.

The most common collection containers are:

  • Desk bins
    – approximately 10 litres in volume. Solid bins suit garbage collection (to prevent leakage) and see-through bins or small cardboard boxes are ideal for paper.
  • Mobile Garbage Bins (MGBs)
    – approximately 120-240 litres in volume. Excellent for paper and container recycling as they hold a large amount and are easy to move. They are often used for transfer between smaller waste collection points and larger collection and storage bins – which may or may not be located in the immediate location.
  • Skip or bulk bins
    – average 1.5-3.0 cubic metres, depending on manufacturer. Excellent for off-site, outside and basement storage and collection points for various recycled materials including resources recovered from construction and manufacturing industries.  Most require easy vehicle access and adequate clearance.
  • Vertical baler
    – high capacity. Excellent for collection efficiency, handling and storage. Often used for managing and handling high volumes of recycled materials, such as packaging and cardboard.
  • Compactors
    – high capacity with 2:1 compaction rates. Ideal for collection efficiency, handling and storage, where large volumes must be handled and storage space is an issue.
